Demon Happening 2/7
Welcome back to the weekly Demon Happenings, where we keep you up to date on everything happening inside Lamoni High School. This week was busy for everybody at Lamoni with three basketball games, a bowling meet, and a jazz band competition.
On Tuesday, The Lamoni Men’s Varsity team took the floor against the Clarke Indians. This was a very emotional night for our Senior class as this was our last game on Lamoni’s home floor. The Demons started out slow, only scoring 11 points in the first quarter. The Demons were trailing 44-18 at the break. The Demon’s came out of the locker room pumped up and ready to fight back. However, the Demons couldn’t match the intensity set by the Indians. The Demons fell to the Indians 75-34.
On Thursday, the Demons had a greatly anticipated rematch game against the Saints of Mormon Trail. Earlier this season the Demons edged out the Saints in the Conference Tournament in single overtime. This game would need more than 4 extra minutes to decide their fates. There was a lot at stake for the Demons as a win tonight and tomorrow, at Melcher, would set them tied for third place in the conference. For the Saints a win here would ease the pain of the last overtime loss. As the ball was thrown up the whole crowd was on their feet and cheered for their teams. The Demons had passed, shot and rebounded their way to a 28-11 first half lead. The last time these two teams faced off, Mormon Trail had an 11-point lead. The Demons came out confident but could not hold down the fort, outscoring the Demons 42-25 in the second half. In the first session of overtime, the scoring went back and forth, leading to another stalemate, 58-58. As the buzzer sounded everyone in the gym knew they were getting their money's worth. The second overtime was scoreless until the last minute. There were great last minute free throws for the Demons. The Demons lost in double overtime, 60-65.
This past Friday, the Demon basketball teams traveled to Melcher Dallas High School for their final conference games of the season. The men’s team had to make the long drive for the third time in seven days. The Lady Demons took care of business against the Saints to finish 9-3 overall in the Bluegrass Conference. The men’s team looked to end a four game losing streak with a win over an athletic Saints squad. After a slow start to the game, the Demons powered through a first quarter deficit and emerged victorious by a score of 60-56. The Demons were led by Senior Chase Potter who had a career high 29 points.
This Saturday the bowling team was in action in Lenox, Iowa, for a three team tournament against the Lenox Tigers and the Mt. Ayr Raiders. While the Demons were unable to win the tournament, they were able to stay constant with past scores. Faye Bland bowled a career high 177 and became the top female bowler in the conference. Nathan Stone improved from a first game score of 51 to a second game score of 144. Austin Davis bowled around his average of 135 and lead the team in average. When we asked senior Omar Alcorta about the team's performance he said, “The team competed really well even when multiple JV members had to step up and replace missing members. As a captain I was happy with our outing.”
Also on Saturday, the Lamoni Jazz Ensemble traveled to Earlham, Iowa, for the annual Jack Oatts Jazz Festival. The Jazz Band played three songs on Saturday with solos from Jennifer Eason, Omar Alcorta, Jared Grove, Chase Potter, and Brett Boswell. After a great performance, the Jazz Band took first place overall and won the awards for outstanding saxophone, trumpet, and rhythm sections. In addition to the sectional awards, Omar Alcorta and Chase Potter were recognized for outstanding solos in the performance, with Omar Alcorta winning the overall outstanding soloist award for class 1A. Congratulations to all of our Lamoni Jazz Ensemble members!
