Battle of the Books Win
On Wednesday April 18, Lamoni Middle School students Kiera Fonseca, Brayden Olson, Kade Nowlin, Lily Meline and Darian Briell competed in the Southwest Iowa Middle School Battle of the Books competition in Harlan, Iowa. The purpose of this competition is to encourage students of all levels to read as well as improve reading and comprehension skills. It requires teamwork, commitment, and effort in order to participate in The Ultimate Battle. The students had to read a total of 20 award winning books from many different genres between September and March before competing online to earn the right to attend the Ultimate Battle in Harlan. Forty teams from thirteen schools competed in the online portion of the competition and the top twenty-one teams were then chosen to continue to the Ultimate Battle on April 18. The online portion of the competition consisted of 60 comprehension questions from all 20 books as well as correctly identifying the authors of all the books. The Ultimate Battle consisted of two rounds of 25 questions with a time limit of one minute per question. The five middle school students, who are all eighth graders, took 3rd place this year, missing a tie for first place by one question! The Battle of the Books team is coached by Lynda Farnham, librarian at Lamoni Schools.
