Service Learning Class Rebuilds Benches
As the first quarter came to a close, Mr. Silver's freshman Service Learning Class was able to finish rebuilding the two shelter benches in Central Park. Students in the class identified their rebuilding as a need for the community and were tasked with finding out a way to make that happen. Students found out that Parks and Recreation Head Tim Brunner received a grant last year to help restore some of the park faculties and some of the money could be allocated for materials for the benches. Students were tasked with creating blueprints to recreate the benches with only the posts left. Next, they had to get a price estimate and material list. Once that was done and materials were picked up, they tore down the old shelters. New boards were cut and attached to the posts. The shelters were rebuild completely, except the posts. Finally, the students had to shingle the roofs. The students learned a lot and did a great job for the community. Thanks to the city for partnering wth us on this activity. Way to show Demon PRIDE.
